About Checked Water
Checked Water helps you answer two questions about the water in your home: what is actually in it, and what will actually fix it.
Both are harder than they should be. Filter boxes list dozens of contaminants. Marketing talks about “toxins” without saying which ones. Reviews rank products without saying whether any of the claims were ever checked. And a scary headline about your city’s water rarely tells you whether it applies to your tap.
What we promise
- We check claims against the record. When a product says it reduces lead or PFAS, we look it up in the certification listings of accredited certifiers such as NSF, WQA or IAPMO, and we label every claim as certified, lab-tested only, or maker claim only. Read how we check claims.
- We start with your water, not with a product. Your utility’s water quality report or a test tells you what to fix. Sometimes the honest answer is that you don’t need a filter at all.
- No scare stories. We explain what the health research shows, including its limits, and we compare your numbers with the legal limits and health guidelines that apply to them.
- Honest about money. Some links earn us a commission and some installers or labs may pay us for introductions. That’s how the site stays free, and it never decides what we recommend. See our affiliate disclosure.
What we don’t do (yet)
We don’t run our own lab tests. Our product comparisons rest on certification listings and published lab reports, and we say which one each claim rests on. If we ever test products ourselves, we’ll publish the lab, the method and the results.
